Your Managers Need Training In Giving Feedback

Effective leaders know the importance of good feedback. Multi-rater feedback gives people critical  insights about themselves and allows them to see an enlightened view of themselves through the eyes of others. Without feedback, we live in a naïve world, where we think everyone loves us and we are never offending or intruding on others.

Yet a new Interact study tells us that 69% of managers feel uncomfortable communicating with their employees. In fact, according to the study “37% of America’s business leaders report they are uncomfortable having to give direct feedback/criticism about their employees; performance that they might respond badly to.”

Giving people feedback is not always easy. Despite how uncomfortable it might be to tell someone that they can come off too direct with their clients or that their casual manner comes off unprofessional, the importance of feedback is immeasurable.

Constructive feedback is the cornerstone of improvement. It is what allows us to have those, Ah Ha moments about ourselves and how to better interact with others.

Yet, people are different, and some people might respond better to your Style of communicating or interacting better than others. Learning how to communicate any necessary feedback with various members of your staff is crucial to administering feedback. It is also important to remember – it’s not what you say, but how you say it. Research tells us that people respond better to negative feedback told in a constructive way, than positive feedback told in a less positive way.
