Irregular Work Schedules Can Lead To Health Problems

A CNN article by Kristen Rogers discusses the long-term health implications of irregular work schedules, specifically drawing attention to their association with adverse health outcomes later in life. Conducting a study utilizing a life-course approach, researchers found that deviations from stable daytime work hours were linked to various health issues, including lower sleep quality, diminished physical and mental functions, and an increased likelihood of reporting poor health and depressive symptoms at age 50. Such effects were particularly pronounced among individuals with volatile work patterns, highlighting the significant impact of irregular schedules on overall well-being.

Being Active While Working

More employees are returning to their corporate offices either full-time or part-time.  While that may create more opportunities for interpersonal interactions, it can also mean more sitting at a desk for extended periods of time.  A study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA), explored the impact of active office workstations such as standing, walking or stepping desks.  The study found that such active workstations can generate health benefits without lowering the work performance.

Hard and Soft Skills are Needed in 2024

In the current job market, talent stands out. There are frequent reports of large-scale layoffs due to people lacking skills another person or AI has. More than half of LinkedIn members hold jobs that stand to be disrupted or augmented by AI. According to The 2024 Most In-Demand Skills, LinkedIn VP Aneesh Raman suggests that people skills are going to come more to the center of individual career growth, people-to-people collaboration will be needed to see company growth and leaders need to be able to  communicate clearly, compassionately, and empathetically with their teams.

Fear is a Common Motivational Tool, But Does It Work?

People are motivated in different ways.  A surprising, recent survey conducted by Love Leadership and First & First Consulting that fear is the primary motivator for a third of corporate leaders.  The problem is that organizations focused on fear are less efficient and psychologically unsafe work environments. This fear-driven leadership costs nearly $36 billion annually in lost productivity, with fear-based leaders losing an estimated 10 hours a week, equating to about $29,000 per leader per year. The survey included responses from over 2,000 managers aged 24 to 54 in the U.S., U.K., and Australia, working at companies with 500 or more employees.
