One CEO’s Strategy Behind Staying Connected

Now a days it is very common that our first correspondence with someone is through some sort of digital platform. This can put an even greater emphasis on our face-to-face interactions.  And yet, when we are face-to-face with people, many of us are so addicted to our gadgets as a means of communicating with others that we often neglect the people right in front of us.

This is why Sheldon Yellen, CEO of the multinational billion dollar property restoration company Belfor, refuses to get a smartphone. In a MSN article, Yellen is quoted saying “‘If someone has something to say to me, they know they can pick up the phone. I’ll answer their question,’ he said. ‘I am approachable, and I can’t convey that through a text.’”

According to Yellen, “I don’t like smartphones, and I’ll tell you why. A young kid was trying to get a meeting with me and sell me a product. Finally after three months, he got his appointment. He’s sitting across from me, and three times during the first 10 minutes this kid looks down at his smartphone and starts texting.”

He told the young man: “I’m not trying to be rude or arrogant, but I think you’re going to have to go. I’m not asking you to get down and bow, but you just spent so (much) of my time texting someone when you’re sitting with me. You gotta go, and one day you’re going to thank me.”

Oftentimes we don’t even realize how distracted we are and how rude we are appearing. For example, your sales guy might be so focused on getting that bigger and better sale that when his phone alerts him that he has an email from a large potential buyer, he completely neglects the smaller buyer standing right in front of him.

In order to separate ourselves from the numerous distractions we must regain focus on our behavioral and emotional intelligence skills.
