SOCIAL STYLE is the world’s best-known and most-widely used tool for improving interpersonal and organizational productivity. Certainly there are many other models and products available. When you consider which model is right for your organization, you should consider the following:

  • Is the material easy to learn and use?
  • Is there research on the impact of the program?
  • Is the information tailored to the specific job responsibilities (e.g. sales, managerial, individual contributor) of the participant?
  • Is there flexibility in the way information can be presented such as courses, self-study, follow-up guides?

For nearly 50 years, SOCIAL STYLE has been the preferred way to improve performance. Colorado State University and Regis Learning conducted research that compared SOCIAL STYLE training with Myers-Briggs and DiSC. And like thousands of organizations worldwide, they found that SOCIAL STYLE was easier to learn and apply than the competitors. See TRACOM SOCIAL STYLE research findings.

This isn’t really surprising because only SOCIAL STYLE evaluates how a person behaves with others and provides specific, actionable direction to improve productivity. Both the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and DiSC Model measure personality, not behavior.

MBTI was developed to make the psychological theories of C. G. Jung understandable. MBTI attempts to measure a person’s preferences on four scales identified by Jung and expanded upon by the mother-daughter team of Katharine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers. These scales are Extraversion/Introversion, Sensing/Intuition, Thinking/Feeling and Judging/Perceiving. MBTI specifically measures personality, not behavior. Similarly, the DiSC model measures a person’s personality using a series of word association questions. DiSC is an acronym for:

  • Dominance – relating to control, power and assertiveness
  • Influence – relating to social situations and communication
  • Steadiness – relating to patience, persistence, and thoughtfulness
  • Conscientiousness – relating to structure and organization

DiSC is based on the work of William Moulton Marston Ph.D. (1893 – 1947) although Marston did not develop the inventory or any assessment.

As the Colorado State research found, participants in all three programs reacted positively to the training, but those that participated in SOCIAL STYLE training were far better able to put what they learned into practice.
