Will Your Career Be Eliminated by 2020?

According to a report from the World Economic Forum, “65% of children entering primary school today will ultimately end up working in completely new job types that don’t yet exist.”

As the world continues to develop, our daily lives are affected by technological advances in both good and bad ways. These changes can include the elimination of jobs, maybe yours…

Is your career at risk of being eliminated? The report tells us that from 2015-2020 job losses can reach 7.1 million due to “disruptive labour market changes.”

Furthermore, the report tells us that some of the jobs most at risk include office and administrative roles, careers in manufacturing, production, construction, extraction, installation, maintenance, arts and entertainment.

These careers are “expected to be negatively affected by a perfect storm of technological trends that have the potential to make many of them redundant, such as mobile internet and cloud technology, Big Data analytics and the Internet of Things, but also factors such as climate change and resource efficiency and workplace flexibility that undermine the rationale for maintaining a large workforce within these roles.”

But let’s take a step back and look at the more opportunistic picture here. Many times when one job is eliminated another is created. Do you remember in Charlie and the Chocolate factory, (the new one with Johnny Depp) how the dad loses his job because there are now machines that can screw on toothpaste caps? All seems lost until he gets a new job repairing the machines that replaced him when they malfunction or break.

While we might not know what the future jobs will be and how to attain the skills needed for such jobs, we can prepare our minds to be ready for such changes. Learn more about Change Effectiveness here.

People who are labeled “resilient” are those with the ability to bounce forward in times of adversity. They see opportunities where others see challenges. Not to mention, they perform more effectively in their jobs, are healthier, more engaged with their work, and have higher commitment to their organizations. Preparing your workforce to be resilient will help them transition into new roles as your company progresses. Change is inevitable and necessary, and rather than avoiding it or prolonging, give your workforce the tools they deserve to not only advance their careers but also advance your company.
