Write down examples of your inflexible behavior and thinking. Keep track of your inflexible behaviors. Take time to write down examples of times when you could have been more flexible in your behavior and in your thinking. Look for patterns in this data. Are you inflexible when working with specific people or on particular types of projects? Is your inflexibility most noticeable in situations where you have strong opinions about something and are not open to different perspectives? Once you have identified the pattern, you can understand the causes of your inflexibility.

To increase your understanding of others, pay attention. Recognizing and understanding others' emotions is mostly about watching and listening. Carefully pay attention to others. Watch for their body language and especially for facial expressions that convey what they are feeling and thinking. Listen not only to what they say but how they say it. What are the words they emphasize? Are they rigid or relaxed? Practice doing this for a whole day. Then do it for another day. Soon it will become a habit, and you will be skilled at recognizing others' emotions.
